This was a mechatronics design project, created to reduce the workload on tired university students who don’t have a dishwasher! The mechanism sits on your tabletop and cleans three dishes in a row using a rotating sponge and multiple servo motors.

The toughest part of the design was figuring out how to tension our belt-driven rotating sponge (to make use of mechanical advantage and move the motor closer to the pivot point so it doesn’t have a large moment). To address this, we made the entire motor mechanism on a slider, so it is essentially self-tensioning – moving the slider to tension the belt also moves the motor!
